The ‘Special School of Joy’ is committed to follow a progressive, observation-based, child-centic approach to education being a powerful tool – one that focuses equally on social-emotional intelligence, language development, physical and cognitive development of the child We believe that for our children’s overall development, social and emotional intelligence is just necessary where it involves the child’s ability to understand and interpret social situations. Responds interaction appropriately by their cognitive ability, involving traits and social skills that facilitates interpersonal behavior. We at ‘Special School of Joy’, provide opportunities to the students to develop these skills, by engaging them in different group activities and tasks that make them self and socially aware With regards to Language development, our students are provided with Speech and Language Therapy sessions which will help the child to improve his/her communication and swallowing abilities. This is one to one session and techniques vary according to the age group and requirement of the child.
With regard to physical development, we at the Special School of Joy, crafts each student’s individual plan and engages in activities that promotes awareness of their bodies, assist in movement of their limbs via Occupational and Physical Therapies.
And finally, with regard to cognitive development, at Special School of Joy, our trained specialists help in the process of growth in intellectual abilities such as thinking, reasoning and understanding so as to build their competency in independent problem solving skills by focusing on gross motor ( jumping, catching) and fine motor (block building, copying etc) skills, cognitive perpetual skills language – answering personal questions ( name, age, sex) and articulation ( for referral to speech assessment) and concepts – naming body parts, counting, self help – skills at feeding, grooming, hygiene, dressing and compliance with adult giving instructions, sensory integration, sharing with group discussions at dining hall, ADL & IADL training.
The five broadly categorized developmental areas mentioned above, in reality are so finely associated with each other that each one depends on and is affected by the development of others. That is why in addition to teaching to students formal academic skills we will focus on helping them build competence in independent problem solving skills.
At the Special School of Joy, we adopt a holistic approach to child development – one that we focus on the whole child rather than simply remediating their areas of academic weakness.
